Ideal weight calculator

Ideal Weight Calculator calculates ideal body weight (IBW) ranges based on height, gender and age. The idea of finding the IBW using a formula has long been sought after by many experts. Currently, there are many popular formulas and the Ideal Weight Calculator we have prepared for you presents their results for side-by-side comparisons.

What should be the ideal weight?

Most people have tried to lose weight at some point, or at least know someone who wants to lose weight. This is largely due to an “ideal” perception of body weight. Today, IBW is widely used throughout sports, as many sports categorize people by their body weight.

Note that IBW is not a perfect measurement. It does not take into account the percentages of body fat and muscle in a person’s body. This means that very fit, healthy athletes can be considered overweight based on their IBW. Therefore, IBW should be considered from the perspective that it is an imperfect measure and does not necessarily indicate health or a weight that one must strive for; your weight may be above or below your “IBW” and you may be perfectly healthy.

The phenomenon of how much a person should weigh is not an exact science. So far, there are no measures that can definitively determine IBW, body mass index (BMI), or how much a person must weigh to be healthy. These are just references, and sticking to healthy lifestyle choices such as exercising regularly, eating a variety of unprocessed foods, getting enough sleep is more important than chasing a specific weight based on a general formula.

Ideal weight calculation factors

However, many factors can affect ideal weight; The main factors are listed below.

Age

Theoretically, age shouldn’t be a big determinant after 14-15 for girls and 16-17 for boys, most people stop growing after this age. In fact, males and females are expected to shorten by 3 to 5 cm, respectively, by the age of 70. It is important to remember that as people age, lean muscle mass decreases and it is easier to accumulate excess body fat. It is a natural process, but it is possible to reduce the effects of aging by adopting various habits such as diet, exercise, stress and sleep.

Gender

Generally, women weigh less than men, although they naturally have a higher body fat percentage. This is because the male body usually has higher muscle mass and muscle is heavier than fat. Not only that, women often have lower bone density. But men tend to be taller than women.

Height

The taller the person, the more muscle mass and body fat, the more weight. A man who is the same height as a woman should weigh about 10-20% more.

Body Size

Body size is another factor that can have a significant impact on the measurement of ideal weight. Body size is typically categorized as small, medium, or large-boned.

A person with large bones will naturally weigh more than someone with small bones even at the same height, making body size a factor that can affect measurements such as IBW and BMI.

Formulas for Finding the Ideal Weight

IBW formulas were developed mainly to facilitate drug dosage calculations.

Formulas differ in the values used based on the research and findings of the scientists involved in their development. The Devine formula is the most commonly used formula for IBW measurement.

G.J. Hamwi formula (1964)

  • Male: 0.3048 at 1,524 meters (5 feet) 48.0 kg + 2.7 kg per meter (1 inch)
  • Female: 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg per 0.3048 meters (1 inch) over 1,524 meters (5 feet)

Tıbbi dozaj amaçları için icat edildi.

B.J. Devine formula (1974)

  • Male: 0.3048 over 1,524 meters (5 feet) 50.0 kg + 2.3 kg per meter (1 inch)
  • Female: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per 0.3048 meters (1 inch) over 1,524 meters (5 feet)

Similar to the Hamwi Formula, it was originally designed as a basis for medical dosages based on weight and height. Over time, the formula became a universal determinant of IBW.

J.D. Robinson formula (1983)

  • Male: 0.3048 over 1,524 meters (5 feet) 52 kg + 1.9 kg per meter (1 inch)
  • Women: 49 kg + 1.7 kg per 0.3048 meters (1 inch) over 1,524 meters (5 feet)

Devine Formülünün Değiştirilmesi.

D.R. Miller formula (1983)

  • Male: 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per 0.3048 meters (1 inch) over 1,524 meters (5 feet)
  • Female: 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per 0.3048 meters (1 inch) over 1,524 meters (5 feet)

Changing the Devine Formula.

Healthy BMI Range

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommended healthy BMI range is 18.5 – 25 for both men and women. Based on the BMI range, it is possible to find a healthy weight for a given height.

BMI is a commonly used metric to determine IBW. It is widely used in the medical field as a quick indicator of possible health complications. In general, the higher the BMI, the higher a person’s chance of suffering from health problems such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and more. It is an indicator used by doctors to advise their patients on potential health problems, especially if their BMI has increased significantly and is currently used as the official metric to classify individuals according to different levels of obesity.

All formulas and methods have limitations. Because formulas are designed to be applied to as many people as possible, they cannot be highly accurate for each individual. Formulas only affect height and gender, and there are no considerations for body mass ratios known for physical disabilities, people at the extremes of the spectrum, activity levels, or body compositions such as muscle mass. Our Ideal Weight Calculator is intended to be used as a general guideline based on popular formulas, and its results are not intended as rigid values that a person must achieve to be considered an “ideal weight”.
