Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul, was born on 4 June 1970 in Cevizli, Akacaabat, Trabzon, Turkey. Ekrem Imamoglu is a member of Republican People’s Party, and a social democrat politician.
Imamoglu graduated from Trabzon High School. He played amateur football as a goalkeeper. In 1987, he moved to Istanbul. He received a Bachelor of Economy from Istanbul University in 1994, and a Master of Human Resources and Management from Istanbul University.
In 2002 he became a board member of Trabzonspor. İmamoğlu joined Republican People’s Party in 2008. In 2014, Imamoglu was elected the mayor of Istanbul district of Beylikduzu with 50.44% of the vote. He announced as the candidate of Republican People’s Party for Istanbul on 18 December 2018. Ekrem Imamoglu ran to become the mayor of Istanbul and was elected with 13,729 votes.
The election board cancelled İmamoglu’s mayoral certificate after the Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party’s objection. A new election took place on 23 June 2019 in which İmamoğlu was re-elected as the mayor by a margin of approximately 800,000 votes.
